Review
Unlike other Sat Navs on the market, the Sony NV-U83 lets you embrace your mobile phone and the need to talk whilst you drive. We don't mean breaking any laws and leaving you looking at the blank walls of a cell, but this clever Sat Nav offers you with the functionality of Bluetooth technology, so that you can use your mobile phone and talk to your hearts content without having to pick up your phone.
The second nifty feature on this sexy Sony Sat Nav is the ability to gather a GPS signal. I've lost count the amount of times I've hopped into the car at home wanting to go to a destination I've never previously been to before only to find my Sat Nav still thinks I'm at work or some other place where I used it last. Then to top it all off, having to wait up to 5 minutes for it to first find a GPS signal and then once its realised I’m not where it thinks I am, it will grudgingly re-route itself.
Nightmare over as this Sony Sat Nav seems to be able to pick up a GPS signal rather quickly and if whilst on my journey the signal is somehow lost, (which still happens on some models) Sony’s Sat Nav can still redirect you even when this signal is lost through its ‘POSITION Plus’ feature.
As an optional feature on this model, it has the ability to easily re-route you past any traffic delays that might be happening in the immediate area because this 'traffic busting' Sat Nav is continually monitored through its Traffic Message Channel (TMC).
Design wise this Sat Nav is sleek and stylish with a capital 'S'. With a 4.8 inch widescreen you won't be hard pressed to see what's on this screen as this is helped by the fact that it has auto dimmer technology, so when for instance you go into a tunnel the screen will brighten up but when your outside on a bright sunny day this Sat Nav will lower the brightness on the screen.
As well as this, it's only 2cm thick making it easy to carry around with you while you pop out of the car and even easier to hide in your car rather than some of the more bulky models on the market.
Finally another feature this Sat Nav brings to the table is a rather novel one, by using touch screen technology so you are able to write on the screen using your fingertips. This is used so that whilst you're out driving and you realise you're running out of juice for your motor, rather than stopping and setting it to take you to the nearest petrol station you can simply sketch out a line or symbol and as long as you have pre-programmed this into the Sat Nav what this line or symbol represents, it will then re-route you to the nearest petrol station.
The Gaj-it Verdict
"¢ Design: 9/10
"¢ Usability: 9/10
"¢ Features: 9/10
"¢ Value: 9/10
We Say: It seems to me that this Sat Nav is a remarkable little machine, taking the flaws of some of the most commonly used Sat Navs and trying to amend them in its own quirky way seems to work a treat, and with the added Bluetooth technology it seems this Sat Nav is making a stand on the safety front as well.
Being priced around £169.99, it's more expensive than most Sat Navs on the market but it's the features that you will come to love and will save you time and petrol in the process.
Do you have one of these Sat Nav’s yourself? Do you agree with our review, want to add anything, or even think I’m talking out of my exhaust pipe? Leave me a comment and tell me what you think here or on the Gaj-it forum.

I bought the Sony nv-u83 for a cool £84 from Halfords…..Its a great unit….Its got a brilliant easy to see screen, and i specifically went for this one because of the bluetooth feature..It can store 500 numbers and with a couple of screen touches will call any one of them using the unit as the handsfree which has great quality…..The only downfall is it could do with better warnings for speed cameras……Overall a great buy….And the mount is brilliant.
this unit is rubbish lacks support from sony would not buy this unit again
never
Brilliant little unit – no complaints except the web site is over complicted – good product though – big Rob.
