Layar has made a name for itself in Augmented Reality arena and now the tech company is extending itself beyond Android. Although it already has a dedicated app for iOS, the company has now launched a Layar player, which is a free tool. If you have reasonable developing skills, then you can use this player to create your own iPhone apps with AR.

Layar has also launched three Layar player enabled apps including Layar Trade, which is a contractor locator App. Other two apps are Snowboard Hero and VerbeterdeBuurt. Snowboard Hero is a Bing sponsored game and has a special AR mode for gaining points. VerbeterdeBuurt, on the other hand, is an app which doubles up as an AR community bulletin board. Augmented Reality is one technology with great potential, however, we have already seen it getting used for some whacky stuff. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Layar player is put to some good use and we get to see some awesome new AR Apps coming out of it.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
