Microsoft has been keeping sales figures to themselves since the launch of their latest mobile operating system Windows Phone 7 which was released back in October. There have been many negative speculations on the sales of Windows Phone 7 devices so far, which have been saying the operating system hasn’t been performing well against their biggest competitors Apple and Google.

Microsoft have finally announced a sales figure for their mobile OS, however this isn’t really the figure on many of our minds. Instead of the total device sales to actual users, Microsoft have given a figure which shows the amount of devices sold to retailers and mobile operators which is 1.5 milli0n.

The figure shows that retailers and operators are buying into Microsoft’s OS, but it still gives us no accurate idea of how well Windows Phone 7 is actually doing.

In regards to the figure, Microsoft’s Achim Berg has said that the figure is “in line” with their expectations. Maybe Microsoft will brave up soon and just tell us what we really wan’t to hear. Is Windows Phone 7 really getting out to the people?

  • The best figures we have for actual sales to customers is 200,000 estimated from usage of the free Facebook app shipped with the phones. This is about a seventh of those actually shipped, and a flop in the same proportion of the Microsoft Kin phone which was withdrawn subsequently.

This is presumably the reason why Microsoft has kept mum about actual sales figures. It may also be the reason for the announcement of a new ARM based tablet initiative by Microsoft (presumably using the Windows Phone 7 OS) to try and widen the appeal of Microsoft’s unpopular device.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
