LG KC910 (Renoir) launch event and phone preview

A few weeks back Gaj-It (myself and Tanya) attended the LG KC910 Renoir launch in London. It was a great event as LG showcased how they are working with some of the industry leaders like Dolby and DivX to produce a leading “Feature Functionality” mobile package that they are really proud of ofcourse the Renoir will be one of many.

The KC910 Renoir is the successor to the Viewty and is the slimmest 8 mega-pixel cameraphone on the market complete with WiFi, HSDPA, GPS, Dolby, DIvX and a full touchscreen.

Personally I love surfing the net before I goto bed so the WiFi would be great but I’ve always asked LG when they were going to include a GPS and now here it is so I can’t wait to get my hands on the Renoir and see how it performs (I wonder how long the battery lasts compared to the iPhone).

I’ve been using the LG Secret as my day-to-day work phone and have been really impressed with the camera, the KC910 takes the camera to the next level, it now has face recognition,  blink detection,  Xenon flash and geo-tagging so you can remember where you were when you took your best shots.

The GPS has many uses, on my iPhone I use Google maps to direct me and its fantastic (I should be writing about this soon). I’m not sure what LG has planned but I wonder if there are going to be any navigation apps available on this device although this does not appear to be the primary use of the GPS.

Many of the bloggers that attended have done a great write up of the event and first thoughts on the phone so I’ll just summarise some of their coverage.

Just to emphasise the power of a GPS, James from Electric Pig touches on the cool Personal Trainer app in his coverage of the phone here. He’s also produced a video with the best bits:

Matt from Tracey and Matt managed to record most of the presentation so if you want to listen to what was said by the folks at LG, DivX and Dolby then its worth a watch here.

Ewan from Mobile Industry Review had a burning question at the LG Secret launch and found the opportunity to ask it again. "When will you be bringing application developer support to the LG platform?" – I think he’s got an answer he was much happier with as LG responded by telling him they are working on something. If this happens then you could see a marketplace like the Apple AppStore and hopefully LG will allow GPS navigation software to be sold. Not sure how this would be made available on this handset but they may issue a firmware update in the future.  Read more from Ewan here

Ewan and his team look like a fun and crazy bunch and I must admit they really know their stuff, James from the team (seen in most of the show below) asked a question that was soo technical that most people were left scratching their heads. Theyv’e actually got quite a few interviews from the event on their show (I watched half of it and didn’t spot Ewan):

We also got to meet Marc who is a good friend of Al from coolest-gadgets who like me is really looking forward to actually doing a proper hands on review – you can view what his written about the KC910 here.

Zath also talked about the event on his blog why not check out his coverage and see what he thought about the phone and the event itself here.

It was also great to meet with some of the other bloggers in the UK like Steve from UKGadgeteer and James from PhonesReview.co.uk

  • I use amaze.com for navigation in my car. Works perfectly and is a sound substitute for navigation mobiles and GPS-navigation.

  • Alasdair

Thanks, really good reviews, especially liked the Renoir.

  • I’m amazed and happy to say that garmin products is of high quality albeit the price is also a bit high but it’s worth paying.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
