Much-touted Apple Mac App Store is likely to be available for public consumption from January 6 next year. The store will be
launched in 90 countries worldwide and will stock free and paid apps. Apple is looking to replicate the success of mobile app store on desktop platform. The app store is available on all Mac computers running Snow Leopard operating system. Apple has given the price-setting rights to developers but the company would get 30 percent cut out of it.
App stores are sure gaining ground as earlier this month, Google also launched an online app store for its Chrome web browser. Google shop is currently available only in the US but would be available internationally in the near future. The shop will also be augmented with online payment system tailored to local currencies. Apple's App Store and Google's Market Place are head to head in competition in mobile app segment. It would be interesting to see how their rivalry plays up in the desktop segment.
