Livescribe Echo Smartpen: The Ultimate Gadget Pen

We use pen and paper on a daily basis the same way we use our PC's, laptops and all the other "i" devices. It seems that, the paper world and the digital world are destined to live as two separate entities; at least until the Livescribe Echo smartpen was invented!

So, what exactly does this smartpen do? The primary feature of this gadget is the ability to record handwriting using its three core elements; the pen’s high-speed camera, an integrated pressure sensor and specialised dot paper.

When the Echo is used on Livescribe’s proprietary dot paper, the pen records a digital image of anything that’s written, and if the internal microphone is enabled, the audio also syncs with the text. After recording, simply tap the pen or click on any word (once the page is uploaded to a computer) to hear what was being said at that time.

Livescribe Echo Smartpen can be an extremely useful tool for studying, organizing, and utilizing your notes which makes it an ideal pen for meetings and lectures. Livescribe’s website also has a decent variety of applications, ranging from games like Hangman to foreign language travel phrase dictionaries.

Other features includes; password system to protect your notes, custom notebooks (In Livescribe Desktop you can group and organize your notes into custom notebooks), and pencasts (you can share your notes as pdfs, audio, or pencasts).

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
