Sodastream Genesis Drinks Maker: Top Gadget for the Whole Family

For those who don’t know, SodaStream is a drinks making system that allows you to carbonate water yourself, then add any flavour you want. The company's slogan says it all - get busy with the fizzy!

The Sodastream is a neat little unit which holds a gas canister (CO2 cylinder) for producing the bubbles. The unit comes with two 1litre drinks plastic bottles. How does it work? Simply fill the bottle with tap water and place it into the screw fitting on the Sodastream. Then pump the button on the top a few times to fizz up the water with CO2.

Once fizzed, choose from the wide range of concentrates and put a full cap of your chosen one into the bottle.  The range includes: coke, pepsi, energy drinks, lemonade, orange, cranberry and raspberry. If you like to count calories you can also choose sugar free options, or you can get creative and  use your own flavours, for examples you could make fizzy Ribena.

Saving costs on fizzy drinks is one of the major advantages of this gadget. Many concentrates cost £2.99 and make up to 12 litres. This works out to only 25p per litre bottle! Plus, The Sodastream puts an end to storage problems and it’s good for the environment - less plastic bottles and cans.

However on the negative side, it's probably not the healthiest option and the plastic bottle isn't dishwasher friendly. The Genesis model comes in three colours, red, white and grey.

The concentrates are a rip off, 6x the price of standard “squash” so use that instead and have more flavours to choose from. When a liquid costs more than the equivalent amount of Ribena, you know it costs too much.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
