Polar Ice Cube – the limited edition gift for the person who has everything?

If you’re looking for something a little less mainstream than the Christmas gifts featured on Gaj-It of late, then this could be what you’re looking for. Dutch duo Coralie Vogelaar and Teun Castelein have farmed chunks of ice from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier in Greenland, stuck them in plastic pods and put them on sale to highlight the impact of climate change.

'A piece of polar ice is a must have collector's item from the ice age,' said a spokesman for their company, MyPolarIce. 'It's a unique relic, a once-in-a- lifetime souvenir. Since scarcity has value, the melting of the ice caps makes your piece worth more every day.'

Only 1,000 pieces have been cut at a size of 9″ a piece, and they can be bought for just £21 each. They all come with a certificate of authenticity (so you know you’re not just getting a chunk of Britain’s recent transport killing snowfall!) and here’s the big selling point – the iceberg they originate from ‘very likely’ sunk the Titanic. How that for a unique Christmas gift?

Unfortunately you have to go to Amsterdam to get your hands on one. I don’t think Royal Mail could get it to you in the three hour time limit available before this little piece of history melts away forever.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
