Yesterday we told you that WikiLeaks had moved to Amazon.com ran servers in order to protect themselves from the numerous cyber attacks which they have been facing since (and even just before) the release of thousands of government 'cables.'
We posed the question does it matter that Amazon are selling the service to a controversial apprently ' a threat to national security' whistleblowing site? Lawyers said that Amazon were almost certainly in no danger of legal action but someone somewhere obviously opposed to Amazon's move as a day later and Amazon.com has stopped hosting the WikiLeaks website.
The site says that it has now moved to a service provider in Europe after being “ousted” from Amazon.com. “Fine our $ are now spent to employ people in Europe,” they said.
Amazon.com was apparently under political pressure to drop WikiLeaks. Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, acknowledges that his staff contacted Amazon.com for an explanation of its decision to host WikiLeaks. Amazon.com notified the senator today that it had stopped hosting the site.
Lieberman said in a statement. “The company’s decision to cut off WikiLeaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies WikiLeaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material.”
Whether you are for WikiLeaks or not, it's not them who have been insulting world leaders, spying on the U.N, encouraging war etc. 'Don't shoot the messenger' and all that. Either way though it's a sad day when a site as big as Amazon buckles under a bit of political pressure. They're all for freedom of speech until the reputation is at risk and by reputation I mean profits.
