If you are one of the many smartphone users who has a device which doesn’t have 1080p video resolution, KDDI’s R&D labs have developed software for zooming on the HD vids without losing picture quality. The software (which was originally intended for large screens) allows users who still want good quality videos playing on their device to zoom in on parts of the video which may have been hard to see on a small screen. The example used in their demonstration was to see a football easier when watching a streamed match.
The tech has the benefit of sending the cropped zoom part to far-off servers which then stream that part back, which would definitely benefit carriers like KDDI who will in effect have to carry less data back and forth with the feature. Also, thanks to the device’s being used pixel deficiency, zoomed images will have almost no quality loss at all.
This tech, (which we’re sure won’t be used at all for anything inappropriate) hasn’t been confirmed to be coming to any devices or OS at the moment, but it could be coming in the near future and we’ll keep an eye out on any launches of the software. A video demonstration of the software in effect can be viewed through the link below.
