ChevronWP7 made waves when it announced that this neat software can let you go around WP7 Marketplace and load apps on ourWindow Phone 7 handset. The software is compatible with Windows computers and unlocks the phone for development purpose. Although the software is not complete jailbreak as it does not allow carrier unlocking, but the software, nonetheless, has elicited stern response from Microsoft.

Microsoft has responded by saying that it was aware that attempts for unlocking the phone would be made. It urged the users to retain the integrity of their handsets in order to "ensure the best possible user experience". The company has then warned against any unlocking attempts by stating that any such action would void the warranty and will also disable phone functionality. Other side effect of such jailbreaking attempt may be the interrupted access to WP7 service. Microsoft ended the missive by stating "render the phone permanently unusable" as a rather severe consequence of using the software.

So, what do you say? Are you still tempted to go ahead and make use of ChevronWP7? We will suggest you to play safe.

This is what is known as a “walled garden”.

Unfortunately, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 has higher walls than any other OS, so it makes it even harder to break out of Microsoft’s jail.

Anyone who doesn’t want to go through the stress of having to jailbreak a closed system like this should buy an Android phone instead.

  • Lol. Microsoft could not handle a marketplace for apps if you fed them medically with a long spoon. ‘breaking’ a windows phone must seem like a release for most. What sort of agreement are folks breaking when they do this, exactly? The one that says you have a snerky twitchy handset that does little apart from expose you to pointless commercial apps and all that? ‘break I would, the phone that is!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
