Cloud based gaming service to release ‘console.’

The way things are heading, a future console may not be a console. When it comes to video games online services such as Steam and OnLive may just be all we need.

In case you haven't heard of OnLive, it’s a service that basically acts like a video game system, but everything is done in the cloud.

Which means, no game discs, no hefty storage requirements for your computer, and no need to take your gaming setup with you wherever you go. You can access OnLive on any computer at any time, true portability

The service has a small and loyal following but now it’s looking increase its accessibility with a dedicated 'console' that players can hook up to their TV.

The OnLive “Microconsole” will available for  a reasonably cheap price tag of $99 and comes with a controller and one free game. Units will start shipping out December 2, and pre-orders are now open at OnLive’s website.

OnLive represents an important shift in gaming. An entire game system can now be connected to a TV, with an Internet connection instead of there being disc.

Obviously it will be years before big game developers jump on board and computers good enough to handle games become more mainstream but a future in which the controller is all we need isn't as far-fetched as it seems.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
