Hotpot: Google’s new review service

Google have been very busy recently. In between bringing voice to Apple, fashion to the web and worrying about Facebook, they've found time to launch a new social service called Hotpot.

A way to find the best restaurants and stores in your area.

Drawing from Google’s existing directory of 50 million businesses around the world, Hotpot links up to your friends and tells you which locations are ranked the highest among the people you trust. It’s Google's attempt to dethrone Yelp and Facebook as the leaders in recommendations for local places. Silly them. Didn't they know you can't be good at anything web-based anymore otherwise Google takes you out.

Unlike those aforementioned services, which offer reviews left by anyone and everyone, Hotpot will only look only at people you bring into your personal Hotpot network. A bit cynical of you ask me.

After downloading Hotpot, Google encourages you to immediately review everything in your area that you’ve been to. This includes hotels, restaurants, gyms, and retailers. Obviously the whole service hinges on the fact you and your 'trusted people' get active.

“With Hotpot, we’re making local search results for places on Google more personal, relevant and trustworthy,” wrote Google product manager Lior Ron.

And of course with Android, you’re always connected to your Google Account so you'll have constant access to Hotpot.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
