With the constant delays and probable cancellation of the white iPhone 4, it’s no surprise that some people who desperately want their Apple device to be a different colour have sought out other means of obtaining their solution. Well, 17-year-old New York Student Fei Lam say this demand, and set up a website which sold conversion kits for the black iPhone 4 which users would put together themselves.
The website, known as whiteiphone4now.com has been around for a few months now and when we first looked at the site it had sold around 99 kits to desperate black iPhone 4 owners. The kits have been going out to customers for around $300 (£188 approx.) and at this time have supposedly shipped over 470 kits. The Kits come with already constructed front and back panels along with the white home button. The parts reportedly come from Apple device manufacturer Foxconn.
Lam claimed that he “knew a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn” which is how he got his contact and steady flow of parts which have now reportedly made him around $130,000 (£82,000 approx.) since the site’s launch.
Despite the student’s clear success with white iPhone 4 kits, it may be wise to note that with this success comes attention, and definitely not the good kind. Lam has reportedly recieved a letter from a private investigator which claims that “his parts are either stolen or counterfeit”. It is unknown if this letter is from Apple, but the company who are incredibly strict on third-party inclusion on their products are likely to make a move soon either way. Knowledge of whether Apple will ever release the white iPhone 4 is a bit cloudy at the moment, but either way, Lam could be swimming in lawsuits if thing’s don’t go his way.
