Last week I told you that Nokia was to start adding near field communication to their Symbian devices and I said that I think it's (NFC) going to become a vital part of smartphones in the future. It seems Google's Eric Schmidt was listening.
In a presentation from the CEO yesterday, we discovered that mobile payments are high on Google's to do list.
Schmidt showed off a device that was obscured so as not to reveal the manufacturer or other specifics. What he did demonstrate was that it was running Android 2.3 and was able to function as a mobile payment solution via NFC.
“This could replace your credit card,” said Schmidt.
Though it's going to take a while for high-end, NFC, smartphones to become common enough to get retailers on board it does seem that our smartphones hold the future of payment solutions.
The old plastic has been the only way to pay for a long time now and other options are bound to spring up as portable technology develops.
