Saudi Arabia Blocks FaceBook and Pope Says Internet Causes 'Disorientation'

Saudi Arabia decided to go offensive and blocked social networking site Facebook for having "crossed a ling". A Saudi Arabiancommunication official said that the site did not conform with the country's values. However, it also claimed that the blockage is only a temporary measure. The ban was imposed on Saturday and the site gave an error message on being accessed. It seems like the ban has now been repealed and the site can be accessed again.

Apparently, Saudi Arabia is not alone in dissing tech. Pope Benedict XVI has also said that Internet may be responsible for the increased "sense of solitude and disorientation" among young people. He also said that internet does not make people more humane but can leave users "numbed". Pope also referred to an "educational emergency" created by technology. He said that this challenge should be dealt with using "creative intelligence". Recently, Pope Benedict XVI had also said that new technologies are setting off "an alarm bell" and held them responsible for distorting the distinction between truth and illusion.
