Senior Vice President of Nokia, Jo Harlow said in an interview in Amsterdam today that the Finnish company is to start rolling out near-field communication capabilities onto future phones in its Symbian line.
The C7 model which is currently available already has the hardware for NFC. The technology allows customers to use their handsets for payments and identification at points of sale and access.
Integrating payment and identification into smartphones is a smart move by Nokia. I think it's going to become a vital part of portable devices in the future. We've already seen it in the form of card readers for the iPhone such as Square, but NFC has the capability to remove the external hardware.
Nokia is working to roll out NFC and other new capabilities to Symbian devices in a continuous series of software updates Harlow told developers and vendors of Symbian based devices and software.
We'll believe that, but if she starts coming up with any wacky ideas then we can assume she's been hitting the Amsterdam cafes.
Jokes aside, it's good to see Nokia moving Symbian forward after let's just call it 'a period of inactivity'
We'll let you know if Nokia announce anything else.
