There's a new kid on the internet browser block, going by the name of RockMelt. Backed by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen the new browser claims that it is very different from its larger competition i.e. Firefox, Chrome, IE; “It does more than just navigate Web pages. It makes it easy for you to do the things you do every single day on the Web: share and keep up with your friends, stay up-to-date on news and information, and search.”
The site will be available for download to the general public soon but at the moment invitations are being dished out which let users get a sneaky early look at the new browser by hitting the RockMelt blog and signing up.
RockMelt is not for everyone. It is directly aimed at Web surfers who spend most of their time on social networks. “Your friends are important to you, so we built them in. Now you’re able to chat, share that piano-playing-cat video everyone’s going to love, or just see what your friends are up to, regardless of what site you’re on. Your favorite sites are important to you, so we built them in too. Now you can access them from anywhere, without leaving the page you’re on. And RockMelt will tell you when something new happens,” says the company’s blog.
One thing to note about this new browser is that it operates on the cloud, which means it can be instantly accessed from most computers and portable devices. There's a Hell of a lot of talk about Cloud at the moment and this could be the secret weapon in their arsenal.
It's a tough market but Chrome has grabbed a share in a short space of time. Will RockMelt be a similar success story or a flop? Only time will tell.
