T-mobile myTouch 4G for $79.99: but is it really 4G?

Smartphones don't have to be expensive, well if you're in the US that is. The new '4G' myTouch handset by T-mobile is being dished out for a mere $79.99 (for new T-mobile customers) which is a bit of a bargain, to say the least. The catch is of course a two year contract, but you could see that one coming couldn't you.

For less than $100 you get an Android 2.2 running touchscreen phone complete with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi, I haven't seen a deal this good in a long time.

The issue is though, is it really a 4G handset? Simply put, No. HSPA+ is no doubt impressively fast but according to International Telecommunications the basic requirements for a 4G service are: downloads of 100Mbps for mobile devices and 1G bps for fixed or portable devices.

In saying that the actual definition of 4G is far from concrete, regardless of the 'basic requirements' until someone literally comes along and says 'No, T-mobile, that is not 4G' then it remains 4G, but it won't be long until then. In fact, AT&T have practically already done it.

Whether it is 4G or not, it's still a good handset currently at a great price so head over to Wirefly, Radioshack, or Target Mobile. And for us in the UK, fingers crossed we get a simillar deal soon.
