3G Conquers Mount Everest, Sort of!

You might be a nature lover, but that does not mean that you have to leave technology behind. An enterprising telecom company has now rolled out Nepal's first 3G service at the Mount Everest base camp. I can hear the trekkers rejoicing! The new service is likely to help thousands of climbers who visit Mount Everest region every year. Until now, they had to depend on satellite phones for remaining in touch with the "regular" world, which, of course, are expensive.

The company behind this feat, Ncell, said that the its new facility will not only help climbers and trekkers but also the residents of Khumbu valley. The company is 80 percent owned by TeliaSonera. The base camp itself is situated at the height of 5, 300 meters or 17, 388 feet.

Currently, only a third of Nepal's 28 million people have access to telecommunication services. Ncell will spend $100 million for expanding its coverage in Nepal. So, if you had been putting off your Mount Everest visit, due to your internet addiction, now, the remedy has arrived. Or you might still want to wait for a couple of more years until they get 4G at the top of the mountain.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
