Soon to be ex-chief software architect of Microsoft, Ray Ozzie, has said that he expects Microsoft to move on from its Windows andOffice based devices and embrace simple, global web based machines. Ray Ozzie is the brain behind the company's cloud computing initiative. Ozzie has exhorted his fellow executives to "fearlessly embrace that which is technologically inevitable."
In his personal blog, he has also envisioned use of "always-available" services through "appliance like", "instantly usable" and "interchangeable" devices. He also went ahead and praised competitors for "seamless fusion of hardware and software and services". We will assume it to be a compliment in Apple's general direction. He also said that the company's competitors have surpassed Microsoft's mobile experience.
Ozzie seemed to have sense of the things to come. As far back as in 1995, he had written "Internet Tidal Wave" memo which had exhorted the company to focus its energies towards web. Although, his vision now seems nearer to reality than ever before, it is yet to be seen whether Microsoft will embrace his idea. The web-based applications are the biggest threat to the company's main products Windows and Office. However, we believe that Microsoft will have to diversify and adapt new technologies if it wants to remain relevant.
