Microsoft Digs at PS3: Claims 3D Gaming is not Mainstream Enough at the Moment

In an interview with CNN, Microsoft Studios Boss Phil Spencer has made claims, laying into Sony's PS3 3D gaming decisions that their decision isn't 'mainstream' and their concept creates a "weird disconnect" to players.

In the interview, Spencer was asked about the future of Microsoft and 3D gaming, in which he revealed that the company has decided not to get in on the 3D market yet due to uncertainty revolving around 3D multiplayer actions. Spencer said that "As an entertainment company, we're trying to do things that millions of people can go enjoy today". Which is fair enough, since Spencer also added the valid point that "people just don't have TV's in their house right now that are going to do 3-D in a way that's going to work".

This brings us onto the PS3 dig for their 3D decisions which Spencer said, "A bunch of people sitting around the living room wearing $150 glasses - I'm just not sure that's kind of mainstream today. Trying to get a bunch of people together in a room where nobody see the same thing"¦is kind of a weird disconnect to me". So hopefully Microsoft won't be kicking themselves in the future if they realise they have to use glasses for 3D gaming.

Despite his scepticism towards 3D gaming on TV consoles, Spencer actually praised the upcoming Nintendo 3DS saying that he liked the device, but had not spent much time on it. Also, don't think Microsoft isn't going to get into the 3D game in the future, Spencer pointed out that it is not a platform to be 'ignored', and there were reports earlier in the year regarding Microsoft partnering up with LG in their 3D-gaming plans.

  • Did M$ not tell us that HD tv would not catch on so you didn’t need blu-ray? You’re full of it Phil – backward thinking as usual. 360 is a dead duck, new slim has not exactly set the sales figures on fire (or we’d be getting told about that every minute of every day). And how does Kinect not create a weird disconnect between their target hard core gaming demographic and the 360? Kinect will be as successful as HD DVD and Vista – ultimately recognised as a poor product

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
