Those who know even the slightest thing about smartphones cannot help but cringe at the name Palm. The company had become to gadgets, what Skoda was for cars. But in April HP came to the rescue and bought Palm for $1.2 billion. Now they're ready to re-release the Palm Pre as the Pre 2.
The original Palm Pre was released in June 2009 with sales for the first week being a remarkably poor 100,000 units, and in recent smartphone market reports Palm has been rock bottom, holding shares as slim as 4.8% (compared to BlackBerry who topped the same chart with 42%)
The Pre 2, a new version of Palm's smartphone will be available in France immediately, and will roll-out in the U.S. in the next few months on Verizon Wireless.
The handset operates on webOS 2.0, the new operating system that HP has developed for the handset.
HP says that the smart phone will have “true multitasking.”
But there just doesn't seem to be enough on offer with the Pre 2 in such a competitive market. This could be the end for Palm.
