RIM hits back at Apple’s critisism of 7-inch tablet devices

Ding-Ding round two. In the red corner we have Apple and the blue corner; RIM. As you may know Steve, at his quarterly 'show off how much money I've earned' conference, completely tore apart the concept of a 7-inch tablet device (thus killing the rumours of 7-inch ipad stone dead.)

"It will be dead on arrival" he said, "People will need to sand down their fingers to use one."

Now, there's a Hell of a lot of companies pushing out '7-inchers' but it was RIM who jumped to their defence; giving Apple a few low blows in the process.

Jim Balsillie, Research in Motion's chief executive, responded with a blog post in which he made such comments as:

"For those of us who live outside of Apple's distortion field, we known that 7in tablets will actually be a big portion of the market, and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience,"

damning words by RIM

But Balsillie didn't stop there he launched into a full on rant about Apple.

"We also know that while Apple's attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of websites that use Flash.”

"We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, everyone inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story."

Oh, did I mention that Steve singled out RIM at his conference? "I think it's going to be a challenge for them to create a competitive platform and to convince developers to create apps for a third software platform after iOS and Android. RIM has a high mountain ahead of them to climb" he said. That may explain the blog post.

Well, RIM has recently unveiled the PlayBook, it's answer to the iPad, which uses a 7in display and supports Adobe Flash so let's wait and see how well it does on that high mountain.

The guy looks like a 17th century child snatcher.
RIM got complacent thinking that business people would only get their phones, they rested on their laurels, released some shockingly bad products and lost their direction. RIM need to focus on what they can do well which is business phones and they should forget about competing with products that other companies can do better.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
