Nintendo Patent a Shopping List App for the DS: Could Shopping Turn Into a Game?

If you're into making just about every aspect of your normal tech-free routines into a computer game, well Nintendo may have an answer for your usual boring shopping routines. There are plenty of Smartphone users out there who might use a digital list when going around the supermarket but Nintendo seem to be setting it up a notch.

Nintendo of America has patented an idea for an application that uses an "in-store wireless shopping network using handheld devices". The devices in question being handheld game consoles of course (in this case the Nintendo DS). From the example images we have seen of the idea it looks like the application would have your grocery check-list on one side of the screen with what looks like a map of the supermarket on the other (perhaps a little like a GPS for all those isles?).

The idea of bringing your Nintendo DS to a supermarket to shop does admittedly sound a little fun. Imagine planning out routes to get your fastest times and having multiplayer games where you and a friend or family member who is shopping with you both have the same map and are trying to grab more items than your opponent (ok I may be trailing off a bit with this idea) but regardless we may be seeing an app or game in the future for real-time digital shopping.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
