Stephen Fry Gives Support to Microsoft and Windows Phone 7

There’s no denying it, Stephen Fry is a respectable intellect who is very popular around the world making him a British icon. Fry’s Tweets have brought many a people to Twitter and to some, thanks to the comedic celebrity game show QI, his word has become law. However, should we just follow the known gadget-lovers word on everything or is he now just a tool for companies to promote their products? Well, whether you want his opinion on it or not, Fry spoke out about the new Windows Phone 7 OS at their event yesterday and seems to very much welcome and support Microsoft’s entry into the Smartphone game.

Fry said, "When microsoft sent me one of these (windows phone 7). I've got a few of them.  My first feeling was that it was fun to play with. And I know it's childish but isn't that how you think of cars and many of the other things we spend our lives doing" adding that he had “felt enormous pleasure using this phone”.

When talking about Microsoft’s entry into the Smartphone game Fry said “You have to be stoney hearted to not welcome a new player” and “I want biodiversity, the more players there are the more it drives creativity and innovation, the more thrilling the space becomes. Will I be using my Windows Phone 7? Yes.” Well, we can’t do anything but agree with this and in fact we’re glad he mentioned it.But, it’s not exactly like we have Apple fanatics whining and crying for Microsoft to go away and leave their favourite company to bring us the one and only iPhone (well maybe a few but who can do anything but dismiss this?).

To summarise, in a more unusual way, Fry said, “I am genuinely thrilled, I never thought this day would come to stand on this stage and praise Microsoft for doing something they can be proud of.” Well this comment is most unusual, I mean sure, Microsoft are renowned for having a heavy monopoly on computers for many years with some sub-standard products but they have always been a key part in much of today’s computer technology and indeed Microsoft can be proud about their new OS. We just hope that people don’t rely to heavily on Stephen Fry’s word and can make their own decisions on what OS works best for them and don’t just follow his law.

  • The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
