Xbox 360 to get Internet protocol television.

When it comes to the 360, Microsoft are taking things slow. Sony have been granting PS3 users IPTV (Internet Protocol television) capabilities for a while now via its PlayTV peripheral but despite the fact IPTV on the Xbox was announced at CES 2007 we're only just about to see it.

As soon as the Playstation 1 emerged with the mind-blowing power to play audio CDs it was clear that the games console was more of a multi-entertainment hub than a games console.  Sony seem to have a better grasp of this than their rivals. They've got Wi-Fi connectivity, an internet browser, a DVD and Blu-Ray player and with PlayTV, the ability to record and play live TV, all on their device. So you'd think that Xbox would be focusing a lot of attention on TV seeing how it has no Blu-ray or browser to offer.

But rant over, 360 users in order to take advantage of this new feature will first need to (if not already) sign-up with AT&T’s Uverse IPTV Service and then they’ll need to already own a DVR that’s been activated to this same service (Oh and the the xbox will need to have a hard drive.) if all that's done, they’re ready to roll.

This latest addition should be coming shortly after the new Dashboard update due early November.

But have Microsoft left it too late? It might have been impressive in 2007 but it's nearly 2011 won't people expect a bit more?
