Samsung Galaxy tab price confirmed: more expensive than iPad

Since its announcement at IFA in September, the Samsung Galaxy Tab's price has been a hot topic. With all this talk of hardware specifications and operating systems it's easy to forget that in the tablet battle it may simply be price that makes the biggest impact.

We know it can be that easy as the Kindle sales shot through the roof after Amazon dropped the price and now the E-reader is stronger than ever. Sure, if there's high quality, top spec device that caters for the business type i.e. the BlackBerry of the tablet world, then it's going to shift units regardless of its price because its target market has infinite pockets.

But for us simple tech-minions £700 is a painful amount of money but thankfully the true figure is nowhere near this inflated speculative price. Though it is still expensive.

DSG Group representative- The company which owns Currys, Dixons and PC World has confirmed the price tag of the Galaxy tab is £599.99 (as seen on Amazon last week.)

At £70 more than the highest high end iPad (£529) is the Tab too high or will people be willing to pay?

They are knocking out $35 tablet devices in India you know.

  • 64GB1

    * Ships: Within 24hrs
    * Free Shipping
    * £699.00

That is the cost of the highest end ipad, which is more expensive than the galaxy tab, obviously T3 got it wrong.

  • Here’s a reason why it’s expensive – IT’S A PHONE!

The other thing to note, since it’s a phone, you can get it on a plan, and thus get it for virtually nothing.

Put it this way, my Dell Streak would have cost £450 if I bought it direct, but since I got a £35 a month contract I got it FREE!

So, how much will a Tab cost? Probably virtually nothing when you get it with a contract.

  • Oh, and:
“At £70 more than the highest high end iPad (£529) is the Tab too high or will people be willing to pay?”
    Look here: http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad

Highest high end iPad is £700, so, the Tab is £100 CHEAPER.

Try looking up the actual price before posting prices like that. :-P

  • Johnny aint buying

Well, a little steep if you ask me. I was considering buying this product as I made the assumption that it would be cheaper than the iPad.

If it were the same price as an iPad I probably wouldn’t buy it. Being so much more expensive has really put me off. Samsung are brave and optimistic. And maybe a little bit silly.

  • Simon Stewart

The highest end iPad is £699.

    £429 gets you a 16GB wifi only
    £529 gets you a 16GB wifi and 3G or a 32GB wifi only
    £599 gets you a 32GB wifi and 3G or a 64GB wifi only
    £699 gets you a 64GB wifi and 3G

So it’s obvious comparison is the 16GB wifi and 3G iPad.

As you say, it is £70 more.

£70 more for full flash support, a camera on the front and on the back, video calling, normal phone calls, text messages and multi tasking.

  • Simon, the quote in the article is:
“At £70 more than the highest high end iPad (£529) is the Tab too high or will people be willing to pay?”

How can you say that “the highest high end iPad” is the 16GB 3G model when there is the 64GB version which is £170 more expensive?

It’s like saying that a Mini is “the highest high end car in the world” when there are clearly more expensive cars out there…

    Johnny, you say:
“Well, a little steep if you ask me. I was considering buying this product as I made the assumption that it would be cheaper than the iPad.”

OK, first, it IS cheaper – the 64GB iPad is £100 more expensive!

Also, they’re not direct competitors – the Tab is a PHONE – tell me where you can make phone calls on an iPad, not to mention that when you buy it with a contract it’ll be a LOT cheaper than the iPad.

There is a rumour that Vodafone will be doing the Tab on a 2 year contract FOR FREE – so, you want it cheaper than the iPad? How does THE COST OF THE IPAD cheaper sound?

  • selfsilent

    Instant fail.
I can’t wait to see all you plums holding this up to your ear to make a call, you’re gonna look stupid and I’m gonna point it out.

  • millgate

It would be more realistic if a commentator did the necessary work and showed a Samsung Galaxy Tab price prediction table which related part cash paid to monthly rental prices and contract length.

I predict, in the UK, that I will be offered a good handful of choice deals for £125 cash and an 18 month contract – let alone 24 months; with 500/500/Unlimited, talk/text/Internet access, for £30/month.

What’s more I’m pretty confident I’ll be offered a FREE device with 300/300/Unlimited – which will do me nicely – for about the same.

I am prepared to wait until my current 3 / Sony Ericsson contract expires in mid-January – so who’s betting against my predictions ?

  • millgate

By the way … selfsilent, above … the Galaxy Tab runs Bluetooth and it will fit into my jacket pocket and I have a matching Bluetooth, near invisible, earpiece/microphone.

The ‘hoodies’ will never hear or see me coming !!

  • selfsilent, if only someone had invented a wired or wireless headset, but in your world of ignorance, they don’t exist.

I bet you’re the type of idiot who is driving and holds their phone up to their ear as well, because you’ve never heard of a headset!

I think you should have stayed silent, rather than showing your ignorance and being an instant fail – at life!

I’m with millgate on the pricing – give it a few months and they’ll either be free on contract or very cheap.

  • rincewind

I am amazed and also amused at the nastiness of comments on here, eg : “I think you should have stayed silent, rather than showing your ignorance and being an instant fail – at life!”…about what is basically a bit of metal and plastic!, why all the fuss? What I would point out is that for £299 you can get a Samsung N220 netbook with an 11 hour battery life, hard disk and windows 7, so why does a samsung or indeed an Apple cost £300 more and offer so much less?

  • rincewind, I think you forgot the obvious humour in my comment – although anyone who doesn’t realise that there are headsets is clearly lacking in smarts. ;-)

On your comment about the netbook, the problem with comparing with Apple is that there is nothing which actually compares with the N220:
Macbook Air – power is comparable, battery is 1-2 hours (if you’re lucky).
Macbook 13″ – power is not comparable, battery is 9-10 hours.

So, if you want to compare the power, then yes, the Apple is £300 more, but if you want to compare battery life, then the Apple is £700 more…
