Sony Ericsson drop Symbian OS in favour of Android

Sony Ericsson have announced that they will likely drop Symbian from their list of operating systems and will focus more on the Android OS.

But they will also be working with Windows Mobile platform (and perhaps Meego when it does eventually make an appearance. )

A statement from Sony Ericsson spokesperson Aldo Liguori said “We have no plans for the time being to develop any new products to the Symbian Foundation standard or operating system,”But he also insisted  that Symbian will continue to be “an important platform” for Sony Ericsson as the company utilizes Symbian in its Vivaz phones and there are indications that that family will have more models in the future which will remain on Nokia's OS.

Despite the success of Apples IOS and Android Symbian has remained the world’s leading mobile operating system and is used in billions of phones and accounts for most of Nokia’s nearly 40% cell phone market share. But it seems that experts can smell a change coming and Nokia could be in trouble.

CEO Bert Nordberg said, "I want us to have the biggest share of Android phone sales in the world. If you look globally, the competition is really between Android and the iPhone. We currently have three operating systems that we use and I would like that to go down to two, with most of our activity going on Android."

The mobile OS world is moving fast so you can never really read too much into any one piece of news. Let's not forget the impact that Meego is likely to make when it eventually launches into the scene. But you can't deny Sony Ericsson must have left Nokia green with Android envy.
