Sixth Generation iPod Nano Manufacturing Costs Half as Much as First Generation

After the release of the sixth generation iPod nano, it was only going to be a matter of time before we got a dismantled look at it (since we want to know all we can about it right?). iSuppli decided to do just this but have also done an estimation on the price of all the individual parts to see how much the newest nano costs to build. The site has estimated that the iPod nano costs just $43.73 to build. What's surprising though is that this sum is just under half the cost of all the pieces used in the first generation nano which came out several years ago.

Of this price on the nano, the screen and its touch features make up half of the costs, and manufacturing the unit costs only $1.37 for each unit.

This is quite suprising to know that generations of product coming out at a fairly consistent price are being made this much cheaper by Apple. However the sixth generation iPod nano is in fact only the second cheapest out of all the generations with the fourth generation costing only $40.80.

All the prices calculated by iSuppli are estimates, however it is likely an accurate account and the large difference between this and the first generation will still be evident. What do you think of this huge manufacturing price difference? Leave your thoughts below.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
