It's getting to the point when the only difference between the iPod touch and the iPhone is phone calls. Well all that's about to change. Unbelievable as it is, rumour has it that Apple has filed a patent application for an ‘accessory transceiver'(transmitter and receiver), which could allow the new iPod Touch to make phone calls and access data networks effectively turning the MP3 player into a smartphone.
The latest iPod Touch already has communication power with FaceTime offering users video conferencing over the internet. With a 'transceiver' the humble music player will have the whole package, apps, FaceTime, calls and music.
“Anyone who claimed that the iPod has reached the end of its life cycle was completely wrong,” said an industry expert in an interview the Economic Times.
Well is it the iPhone that's reaching an end? I can't see it can you? But surely something's got to give. Consumers will go one way or other and think 'If it can call, I may as well just get an iPhone' or 'What's the point in getting an iPhone if I can call off my iPod.'
It's an interesting proposition by Apple and throws up all sorts of exciting questions. How exactly will it work? Will networks get involved? We could see iPods on contract.
What do you think of all this?
Do you have an iPod and would you like to call off it?

When doea the new apple patent will be released? I want to change my ipod touch to a iphone, one month ago,i have heared the Apple peel 520 which is a similar Apple patent app produced by Chinese,i remember when i read that news, i am very excited, and i want to order one!
Im my opinion, it is better to buy a apple peel 520 than a normally apple case.
The reasons are below:
ipod touch+ Apple peel 520 = iphone 4
A iphone you will cost $599 for the 16G and $699 for the 32-Gbyte version, and a ipod touch cost $199 for 8GB , $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB . A apple peel 520 just cost $60 .(a normally case may cost $29) if you get two 32 GB device,
iphone 32GB cost $699 , ipod 32GB cost $299 . Wow~~~ how much can you saved …. haha , that is great … at the same time, if you get a ipod+apple peel 520 , don’t forget download a Aneesoft free ipod video converter .

and no digital compass, half the RAM, no IPS screen, no GPS and a 0.7MP camera.
Quite a few differences then.
has anyone had any issues with their new ipod?
My ipod touch 4th gen is awesome. ability to text to make phone calls for free… via voip. what more could you want. :D
I agree with selfsilent. The ipod is not as good as the iPhone but I already use my ipod as a phone. I’m always around wifi. But with textfree I text and use the speaker phone. Not to mention Facetime. I had an iphone 3g and ipod touch 2nd gen. I gave them to my kids and got me and my wife 2 4th gen. ipods. Were phone bill free and loving it. And no, no problems with them. Any of them. Even the 2nd gen. that after numerous drops, finally fell just right and cracked the screen. Its been beat up so bad that not even the apple on the back is visible. Still works great my 2 yr. old loves it. And doesnt even mind the scratches. It was my first apple product and it got me hooked.
Any method to make calls from an ipod touch will be good and even better if the calls are free!
