This weekend had been pretty hectic for Facebook. Apparently, it all started with TechCrunch reporting that the company is"building a mobile phone". The social media company did not waste much time and issued a lengthy statement denying the report. However, the company's effusive denial does not preclude the possibility of it marketing a co-branded phone.
According to CNET, although the company trashed TechCrunch report stating "Facebook is not building a phone. Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this.” But it did not respond to CNET's query about the company's position on "marketing a Facebook-branded phone made by a third party". CNET also claimed that Facebook had sent feelers to hardware manufacturers and carriers over this summer.
Facebook has been known for its leaks. A long time back, the company was rumored to start offering music service, however, that project never got to see the light of the day. But at the very same time, Google had denied working on Nexus-One up until a few weeks before its launch. So, now only time will tell whether Facebook-phone becomes a reality or gets filed under "R for Rumors".
