After countless rumours and speculation about the existence and possibility of a PSP 2, it seems we finally have a bit of solid(ish) evidence. The Executive Producer of the upcoming Mortal Komat reboot Shaun Himmerick, revealed in an interview at PAX 2010 that not only did the device exist, but that his team actually has one at Netherrealm Studios.
Himmerick stated, "We're not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we're looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We're running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We're definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it's a pretty powerful machine. We don't have a 3DS system in house yet, but we're looking to get one, and we'll certainly look at what its power is.
So while Himmerick did let it slip that the device exists in some form or another, it seems we aren't getting any specs or details soon even if it is "a pretty powerful machine". Whether this slip of the tongue was true or not is still to be speculated, but we expect Sony will remain tight-lipped on the matter.
In the Nintendo dominated handheld console market, will the PSP 2 being a "powerful machine" be enough to compete with a company that seems to be using a different approach to draw in their sales? Leave your thoughts below.
