IE9 preview: HTML 5 and Windows 7

Poor IE is being hammered by Firefox and Chrome but Microsoft is set to save the day as it unveils Internet Explorer 9 beta at a launch event later today with a heavy focus on HTML5.

The company is set to unveil a host of new features allowing users to pin their favourite sites to the taskbar and start menu in Windows 7.

IE 9 will take advantage of the power of the GPU for all page rendering and developers can exploit this using CSS, DHTML and javascript. A new JS engine (codenamed Chakra) will also be built into Internet Explorer 9 with greater interoperability and standards support all round.

The new IE came out on top when Microsoft put the new web browser through its paces. A total of 2,138 tests were performed on a variety of browsers. Internet Explorer 9 scored above 90% in average across all tests, while every other browser, except Safari 5 and Chrome 5 didn’t come close to scoring 90% or above in any of the test categories.

Microsoft will be unveiling a number of launch partners including eBay, Hulu, CNN and Amazon who have all created special sites for the new functionality.

Copying off Google's partnership with Arcade Fire, (the not so good) Gorillaz are set to pair up with Microsoft to introduce Internet Explorer 9 in the UK later today.

We'll bring you more information as it comes.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
