After countless on/off rumours it seems Google Me is finally confirmed. During the Google Zeitgeist conference in Arizona, Eric Schmidt confirmed the social networking site will arrive this autumn.
Schmidt has said that Google has been trying to get access to Facebook contact lists so people can easily expand their Google Me network and implied that this is perfectly fair because of Facebook's use of Gmail (among other e-mail services) to invite friends to join them. However, it's not like Facebook is just going to be allowing this, but Schmidt has said, "The best thing that would happen is for Facebook to open up its data. Failing that there are other ways to get this information."
Schmidt hasn't said much on the specifics of what Google Me will have to offer, and it has been reported that Google Me is still being worked on. Apparently, the site will focus a little around YouTube, as well as make use of services such as Flickr and Twitter.
Google have already tried to give social networking a go in the past with Google Buzz which inevitably flopped, but Google Me could be the fresh start to social networking some may want.
Will Google Me be unique enough to bring in followers? Can the millions on Facebook be convinced to try another social networking site? What do you want Google Me to do that Facebook and Twitter don't? Leave your thoughts below.
