Google Instant Now Available: Instant Results With No Enter Key

So, after the curiosity of yesterday's Google Doodle and the impending press release from Google, our questions are answered, and we are now getting Google instant. The image below showing the grey text after typing should explain yesterday's doodle to you.

The new feature from Google is rather impressive, instantly showing search results for the op suggested search each time you type a letter (for example, typing 'g' will instantly have results for Google maps because it is first in the drop-down box). Google has described it as a "psychic element "¦ in that we're able to predict what you are going to type. Google becomes search before you type." Also, pressing the up and down keys to highlight the other options in the drop-down box will instantly show search results for those. Who needs an enter key anyway?

The service is currently available for signed-in users in the UK, USA, France, Spain, Germany, Italy and Russia, who use Chrome, Internet Explorer 8, Firefox and Safari. Do not fear if you don't fall into this category, the service is expected to be available to all Google users over the next few days, with a Mobile version to be released this fall. There is also going to be native browser integration coming in the next few months, which is expected to be a similar feature using your address bar.

An interesting thing that was spotted at the presentation was a mysterious counter which has been revealed to be hours saved by Google instant (because those 0.5 second searches were way too slow). It had gone over the 36,000 mark already and is expected to hit a massive 350 million over the course of a year.

Have you checked out Google's newest feature yet? Leave your thoughts on it below.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
