Nokia N9 ‘delayed’: No MeeGo at Nokia World.

Where did Nokia go after the 3310 and Snake era? Circa 2000 Nokia were the mobile phone market and a decade later it's hard to see their position in it. They seem to (along with other phone manufactures) have been lost in the battle between iPhone and Android (with BlackBerry on the side.)

Their hotly tipped 'comeback handset' the N9 was all set to burst into the ‘Nokia World’ event in London next week and get us all excited about Nokia again. They're partnership with Intel was said to be reinventing mobile computing.  We've all seen the pictures and we've all heard the rumours and just as we we're anticipating it's official unveiling, the cloth has been thrown back over the handset.

For unknown reasons the N9 release has been 'delayed' and sources have told Swedish site Mobil.se that Symbian 3 will now dominate proceedings instead, with the E7 now the favourite to take the biggest portion of the limelight at Nokia World.

So no MeeGo yet then. Nokia's PR people have denied any delays, saying, "What we’ve communicated is that we will present a new mobile with MeeGo sometime in 2010, but exactly when we have not said."

Looks like we'll have to wait for the November 15 MeeGo meeting in Dublin for more news on the Nokia N9.

Are Nokia hiding something?

  • i think that symbian OS is a doomed OS and only people who aren’t educated in mobile OS’s would buy it. Just give us meego so we can mod it with android.

The reason for the delay because it isnt complete/ I cant see nokia winning the fight if they keep delaying the inevitable of symbiasn OS failure all it is, is a waste of resource and everybody time including customers. Why would anyone buy a OS with lack of apps and community base compared to android and apple

  • I for one have been holding out for the N9 and was expecting some news on it (not the actual device itself) and Nokia World, if it proves to be the case that nothing is said and HTC at there event show something worthwhile, I won’t be waiting any longer for the N9!!!

So the media assumed that the N9 was a MeeGo device and that they would announce it at Nokia world. Why? Nokia has never said it!

Only uneducated people think Symbian is doomed. Do you know how many people are the US alone that don’t use smart phones? Most people don’t like phones that have a required $100 contract associated with them. Kids rarely carry smart phones because of contract costs and the replacement cost. Nokia is betting they can undercut everyone price wise but match in feature of the competitors phone. And at the same time provide a higher end device with MeeGo. And have software compatibility between them. When I walk into Best Buy, Walmart, RadioShack, etc… I don’t see only iPhones and Android devices, they are the minority. Until that day Nokia will do fine.

  • Hurry up nokia, my cellphone contract is expiring soon, and I want Meego.
Otherwise I will have to settle for Android for the next 2 years.

Are you nuts? or is your mouth running off without your brain noticing?

Symbian was arguably the first ‘smart-phone’ OS with open aspects and community support, it has a HUGE following and many people produce apps and have an in-depth knowldge of it and access to the inner worksing of that OS, unlike Apple.
It’s increadably stable and require very little resource, the only issue with it now is that it was not designed for todays devices (and more importantly advanced tech like touch screen) and is a bit of a legacy product.

Not sure what symbian 3^ will be like as i’m an N900 user now, but i recon it will be a winner as it’s had almost a total redesign.
