So, here is a quick trivia question. What's the name of Android 3.0 OS? What did you say, Gingerbread? I am sorry, you lose. The correct answer is Honeycomb. According to the rumors, poor Gingerbread has been demoted to incremental release status and would be released as Android OS 2.X. Google is looking to launch Honeycomb as a full fledged new generation 3.0 OS, which would be optimized for tablets. Therefore, Gingerbread is likely to be restricted to smartphones. Given, the fact that various tablets such as Samsung Galaxy and ViewPad run on Froyo and still give damn-good performance, I cannot wait to see what Google is going to do with Honeycomb to make it "truly" tablet optimized.
And the Honeycomb is already courting suitors. Speaking at IFA, Samsung's Head of product planning, WP Wong said that while Galaxy Tab will be upgraded to Gingerbread, the company is also working on a Honeycomb-powered tablet. He also described the said tablet as a "different type of tablet" and thus obliquely referenced the OS as the one made for "different type of tabs". What a tease! In a world where people are still clamoring to get a taste of Froyo, I think it is very cruel to tout Honeycomb. Anyways, all we can do is to wait for the Honeycomb, oh wait, I mean, Gingerbread to be released, which may be rolled out any time during October.

I’m also really looking forward to this and Viewpad is something that I think there should be more of. I’m much more interested in a dual boot device than a tablet only device. The HP touchsmart devices were a real innovation now we need more like it which can be used as a tablet and notebook.
