Free iPads given to school children

Apple has been in the news recentely as doctors have started to replace stetehscopes with an iPhone app and now yet again we see how their prodcuts can extend beyond simple consumer electroincs and function as usefull tools in various situations.

One of the first suggested uses of the iPad beyond 'replacing the laptop' was as an educational tool.

And now lucky students at the Cedar School in Greenock, Scotland have been given iPads to use for their studies. In total, 105 iPad units were handed out. They all connect to the school’s  wireless network and allow students to receive coursework and to  research the subjects being taught.

The iPad approach to education was said to be used to ensure 'students are fed a daily quota of homework and various activities.'

The use of the ipad helps to keep education hands on and engaging with pupils apparentely watching science videos on YouTube and reading E-books in class.

This isn't the first time we've seen books ditched in favour of the iPad. St Catherine’s High School in Racine in Wisconsin required that their students fork out on Steve's tablet device in order to reduce the burden of 'heavy textbooks.'

With E-reading probably a lot more convenient than  stacks of large, heavy, rippable textbooks (which will eventual become old editions and need updating) it's easy to see how schools are inclined to adapt technology into their teaching.

But the School in Greenock is 'The Cedars school of excellence' (a posh independent school) so the children can be trusted but what about when we start pilling iPads into the hands of the riffraff? I hope they get them insured.

OMG, if a doctor used an iPhone instead of stethoscope on me, I’d show him or her how well my reflex is, and then go find a real doc!!!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
