Facebook better watch its back! Google is going full steam ahead to challenge Facebook on its home turf that is social media. Google working on "Google Me" is old news, but the company is now on an acquisition spree to assert its dominance in the segment. Just a few days back, Google had announced its acquisition of start-up Angstro and now it is going to gobble up yet another social media player, SocialDeck. SocialDeck is a developer of multi player games for BlackBerry, iPhone and Facebook, whereas Angstro describes its mission as "to sort information about individuals found on the web".
Google sits on a comfortable pile of cash, and seems like it is making good use of it. In the month of August itself, the company bought Like.com, which is a visual search engine, Jambool, an online gaming currency and a social gaming company "Slide". And add to it the above two companies and Google made five acquisitions in a single month, and "incidentally" all the acquired companies belong to social media sector.
So, now it is an open secret that the company is harboring some social-media ambitions. But the point is that whether it will be successful in its new venture. After all, its last social platform Wave met an ignominious end and Buzz created the buzz for all the wrong reasons. Lets watch this space whether the company's new initiative gets bouquets or get thrashed by brickbats.
