Nokia and Intel recently teamed up for Meego and it seems the partnership between the two companies is set to be long term. Today they announced a new research lab in Oulu, Finland.
The Intel and Nokia 'Joint Innovation Center' is part of the University of Oulu and will now be home to around twenty four researchers in the university's 'Centre for Internet Excellence' The researchers will focus on 3D mobile technology which Nokia’s has been playing around with for a while now. The focus of the work will be on three-dimensional virtual reality platforms and mapping. The team are also said to be developing 3D holographic caller display: it's all very futuristic.
“The University of Oulu’s focus on future telecommunications solutions as well as electronics and photonics made it the perfect location for the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center,” says Justin Rattner, Intel chief technology officer. Intel have similar labs in Barcelona and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain as well as the Intel Visual Computing Institute and the Saarland University in Germany and Intel Labs Berkeley at the University of California though this is the first Intel lab to run in collaboration with Nokia.
In the mean time we are waiting for MeeGo-running N9 handset from the two.
