Google must feel on top of the world at the moment with Froyo exploding onto all the latest handsets and taking the smartphone industry by storm. But like everything thing else, something was bound to come along and knock Android of its perch.
There's no doubting the quality of features and applications on offer with Android, but worryingly it seems that security on the other hand is not up to standards.
Two security experts have released a tool for attacking Android-based smartphones which can be used by hackers to exploit a vulnerability in Google’s mobile operating system allowing them to steal sensitive user information from smartphones, including text messages (so expect lots of celebrity scandal in the coming few weeks!).
Security expert Nicholas Percoco, (head of online payment security company Spider Labs) said that the hack had been released 'in order to force manufacturers to patch the vulnerability before it is exploited by true malicious hackers "in the wild" .
Speaking to Reuters, Percoco continued: "There are people who are much more motivated to do these things than we are. We could be doing what we want to do and there is no clue that we are there."
He said the tool has the ability to steal entire contact lists, browsing information and text messages.
Worrying times for Android users. If you're using Google's OS then you'd better get your saucy texts deleted before somebody steals them off you.
