With jailbreaking deemed legal by the US and Geohot said it was possible, it would appear Comex and company have released the long-awaited jailbreak to the iPhone 4. The JailbreakMe hack uses the Safari browser to break into (almost) any iOS device.
The servers are currently being hammered by excited iPhone users but once the initial stamped wears off the app can be downloaded and used to break theiPhone 4, 3GS, 3G iPad etc allowing consumers to download the apps that Apple won't let into the app store. The guys at Engadget successfully got the jailbreak to start working, but it crashed Safari. They managed to restore the handset but there are still fears that legal or not some jailbreaking apps could 'brick your phone' so if you're tempted by the prospect of jailbreaking now that it's legal, remember it's not necessarily safe and could still void your warranty.
That said, after another go, they successfully broke an iPhone with the app and everything seemed to be running well. There are reports of some issues with MMS and FaceTime post jailbreak but the clever hackers seemed to have solved this already. The Cydia package can bring back video chat on some the phones and Comex says that a new version of the jailbreak which has just gone live, avoids the MMS/FaceTime.
Are you brave enough to risk a jailbreak or are you happy with the apps on offer in the official Apple store?

These guys deserve all the credit they can get! What an awesome job! The JailBreak is done remotely over the net, which means there is no need to connect your iPhone to your computer. The JailBreak uses Safari. Now we just have to wait for the Devs to spruce up the choice of iOS4 apps in Cydia.
Obviously the http://www.jailbreakme.com address is getting hammered so use jailbreakme.modmyi.com if you get stuck at the purple screen.
This is a great news to get the best out of your iphone, thanks for sharing, I’d better wait for the iphone 4.1 and see.
