Its official now! HTC Desire and Nexus One will not be using AMOLED displays exclusively anymore, partly due to the fact that AMOLED manufacturer Samsung cannot cope with the demand and therefore the displays are in short supply. HTC is now likely to use VSPEC III LCD from Sony instead of Samsung AMOLED. Although the company chief has said that the SLCD or super LCD displays are capable of providing the same visual experience as that of the current ones, the company will still continue to stock on AMOLED.
The company has claimed that the SLCD is slightly superior than AMOLED, since it provides the same level of performance but uses considerably lesser battery power. Rumor has it that it also displays more natural colors and has a brighter contrast. Couple it with the broader viewing angle, and you have got yourself a deal. However, the entire operation of using new displays is a bit stealth, since the company will keep using AMOLED as well. Also, the company has not said anything about Droid Incredible's fate, so we will just assume that it will get to keep AMOLED.
Both these displays will look more or less same to the layperson like me, so there is no way a buyer can tell which display they have got. IMO, HTC should let the customer choose which display they want. Good customer service idea, Yeah! Sound practical advice, don't think so.
