High-end smartphone segment is gaining a lot of attention lately, but it does not mean that budget phone market is devoid of action. The latest entrants in the field are LG Pop and Samsung Monte. These beauties maybe in the budget section, but do not lack either in looks or in functions. First off, both these phones are touch screen devices and are equipped with decent 3.2 megapixel camera. However, there are differences too. So let's pit LG Pop against Samsung Monte and see which one comes out a winner.
Screen: Both the phones sport 3-inch touchscreens, but use different mechanism. Now, the common problem is that 3-inch real estate for a touchscreen device is just too puny, even if you have pin fingers. But Samsung Monte phone does not support multi-touch, which in turn makes its screen more responsive. LG Pop, on the other hand, has a clever design with its 240×400 screen covering the entire front of the phone, adorned with just one single button. My vote here goes to LG Pop for its sleek and minimalist looks.
Operating System: The problem area! Both phones have less-than efficient operating systems. LG Pop runs its proprietary operating system which it shares with other LG phones. The operating system is easy to use but is annoyingly slow. Samsung Monte runs Java OS and is equipped with Touchwiz interface. Samsung had pepped up its interface last year, but most of the new features are lost in this phone, thanks to its tiny screen space. And LG Pop gets my vote again for its easy to use OS.
Camera: Samsung Monte has the same 3.2 megapixel camera like LG Pop, but sans flash and autofocus. Bummer! Given the fact that, otherwise, Samsung phone camera has some solid features such as face and smile detection. Well, I have just lost my smile for Samsung and here is my third vote for LG Pop.
Price: Current average price for contract free Samsung Monte is £150. You can also pick it up for £10 per month on a 24-month contract. LG Pop again trumps Samsung Monte with its £140 contract free price tag.
Bells & Whistles: LG Pop seems to be in clear lead, but here is the downer. This cute little phone has neither 3G nor Wi-Fi capability. But if you can get over this flaw, then this phone gives you video recording and playback facility, along with Bluetooth and an accelerometer. Its memory is expandable to 32GB using a microSD card, whereas Monte's memory is limited to 16GB even with a card. LG Pop also features fancy solar panel battery cover, which lets you charge your phone by sunlight.
Although LG Pop has managed to snag all my votes, but it does not mean that Samsung Monte is a lost cause. This phone has its own redeeming features, which include fast and seamless internet browsing capability thanks to its Wi-Fi capability. The phone also have full HTML browser and allows you to personalize your gadget. Bottom line is that both the phones provide features and functions which more than match their price tag.
