French computer game publisher and creator Ubisoft have waded into the 3DTV debate this week as they have stated that they feel that the new uber expensive tech will become mainstream in under 3 years.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Ubisoft’s marketing man Murray Pannell compared that current uptake to what happened when High Definition TV’s first came out.
The adoption of 3DTV “will start slowly,” he said. “But like HDTV, I wouldn’t rule out the fact that this will be installed in everyone’s living room in three years’ time”.
The big three in the gaming world have completely different views with regards to the expensive tech – Sony are were the first to take the first step in the 3D world – and have recently added 3D connectivity for their Playstation 3 .
Nintendo on the other hand have created the 3D tech but without the need of those ugly 3D glasses. And Microsoft haven’t even mentioned any future plans regarding 3DTV’s for their 360.
Pannell added: “For the naysayers, if you like, I would say, ‘Just watch this space’, because when you have global corporations like Sony pushing 3D as hard as they possibly can, Sky, equally, showcasing 3D content on TV, I believe it will become a much more important part of consumer electronics than a lot of people believe.”
We think 3D will have a part to play in the future of gaming, but it’s going to take a lot longer than 3 years for it to truly penetrate the market the way HDTV’s have over the last few years.
