Microsoft have announced the latest revenue figures for their ever-impressive Xbox Live Service and they have confirmed that it generates over 1 billion dollars each year.
There are 25 million active gold members on the service at the moment, which accounts for $600million in subscription fees, but this is only half of the money it generates.
So therefore if downloadable content is taken in account which includes – avatar clothing, game content, films, Live Arcade games - it would suggest it exceeds that figure, then total revenue for Xbox Live must be $1.2bn or higher.
Microsoft has been playing second fiddle to Nintendo when it comes to console sales figures but they can't be touched on micro-transactions. This bodes really well for when Kinect lands this Christmas which will really benefit from selling small arcade games, which can be sold over Xbox Live.
This probably explains why Sony is making a premium subscription service for it Sony PS3, which will allow Sony users to pay for extra content and early access to betas.

Is this a new practice? a few years back, companies were very cagey about how much they made and then Apple started sliding it into their keynote speeches.
I guess it’s more of a “call to arms” towards the other manufacturers as why do we care how much of our money has lined their pockets?
