Google Android is fast gaining ground and is being adopted by more and more handsets. HTC has now announced rolling out three new handsets featuring Android 2.2 FroYo, the latest version of mobile OS Android.
The three new handsets with this yummy OS, yes FroYo is short for Frozen Yogurt, are HTC Desire, Wildfire and Legend. HTC officials have also said that these phones are among "several of our 2010 models" with updated Android. Google had released this seventh update to its OS in May.
It has some very attractive new functionalities added to it, like, it will let you turn your smartphone into a portable hotspot. And hold your breath, it also will provides support for Adobe Flash. Take that, Apple. Just to show that Android is not stuck in the rut, it also supports HTML5. Apple, now, really need to think about its parochial attitude.
There are new tools available for the developers as well. Google has announced that it has more than 180,000 active Android developers working on creating new apps and its Google Marketplace now boasts of a diversified portfolio of 50,000 apps. Although, it is still lagging behind mighty Apple's cache of 200,000 Apps.
The new OS also has considerably higher speed thanks to a JIT compiler. Since Google is at the forefront of the Cloud Movement, It is only fair that the delish FroYo offers Cloud-to-Device API. So with this new feature, you can easily sync your chrome extensions and apps (soon to be released) with your android powered gizmo.
With all these developments, we hope that Apple will get some tough competition, since Windows Mobile has not made quite a splash in the mobile OS segment and BlackBerry is old news. As a consumer, having just one company lording over the entire market is the last thing I would want. Let's see if Android rises up to the challenge.

Picked up a new Desire about a month ago as a company cellphone but am very disappointed , firstly i would have about 900 contacts on my previous XDA and was able to view by company or individual, not so on Desire only by individual which is of no use especially with no search option either. Android 2.2 is supposed to have search facility but not different view option launch date seems to differ each time . Battery pretty good approx 18 hrs medium usage. Wireless bluetooth poor, paired with parrott car kit ok for day or so however won’t connect even by unpairing and pairing new, same problem with bluetooth headset……..any ideas
Android has had a growth explosion, but what commentators are failing to recognise is the number of (new) users who are completely dissatisfied with the complexity, clunkiness and fragmentation of the platform. Buying an Android phone is completely hit and miss, you don’t know what apps will work or not until you try, developers cannot guarantee app compatibility across all handsets. Then there is the amount of things which do not work properly or consistently, the sheer amount of fiddling and configuring to get the most out of the phones. The Android Market is total garbage compared to the App Store. Games are dreadful and appalling, they cannot come close to iOS games, poor selection, low-spec games, highly constrained by the severe limitations of the Android OS. There is no system wide copy and paste and poorly coded apps (there is no quality control) can crash the phone, only removing the battery will help. The user experience is ok for a very light user who loves to configure stuff just for the sake of it, I just want it to work and I’m not alone in thinking that way. Apple got it right, and facile politics about App Store control aside, their way of doing and controlling things works and produces a higher quality platform and a far superior user experience, for me that is the ONLY thing that matters.
I am a ‘soon-to-be’ htc wildfire user from Kenya. I have been performing some research on this phone and i have discovered it to be the very best finances-smartphone.I am now able to order it, unlocked obviously, since it hasn’t yet began being offerd in my country. The only huddle but to be falt with is findinga respected firm willing to export abroad, especially to Africa. Thus far the only site i’ve discovered is expansys.co.uk.
Well, here we are, almost in December and where is Froyo 2.2 for Wildfire? And there seem to be no solid answers about when or if it will now be happening. Mostly if you contact HTC to enquire you receive a stock response that does nothing other than beat around the bush. Most recently, the response states that HTC cannot confirm when, or indeed if, the update for Wildfire will be arriving. I have had enough of this attitude HTC have chosen to adopt towards its loyal customers and therefore have decided to lobby HTC to get an answer once and for all.
