Apple have made claims that the its new iPhone 4 screen is “chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic” and it’s “ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever.”
So the people over at iFixyouri decided to put Apple claims to the test by dropping the iPhone 4 from 3.5 feet (the distance you drop a phone when you’re standing up).
They revealed that they managed to get a real iPhone 4, but without any internal parts and test it. The iPhone 4 survived two shocks but the third one wasn’t as successful as the display completely shattered after a loud pop.
So although you might have been reluctant to cover that beautiful all-glass-and-steel design with the iPhone bumper cases Apple are offering to protect your iPhone 4 with, I am pretty sure you will be almost inclined to buy one now after this test done by iFixyouri.
Does the test hold up for you? Does the iPhone 4 bumper case which covers up the sleek design of the iPhone 4 put you off buying the new iPhone now? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think…

Oh god! I’m constantly dropping my 3GS and i’ve been really lucky it’s been so sturdy. I’ll definatly be buying a full case now!
yes i would still buy the iphone 4
that’s why i own a sonim phone with gorilla glass.
I won’t be buying one for all the right reasons.
Idiots.
You guys have the engineering background of a 6 year old.
“Stiffer” and “harder” does not equate to ‘stronger’ and ‘tougher’. Some of the hardest substances on Earth are the most brittle. Are you lot retarded or something? Do you know nothing?
This is Apple’s attempt at making their screens more scratch resistant, not bullet proof. If you’re so careless as to drop your mobile phone onto a concrete slab from 3.5ft, perhaps you should consider a more child-safe alternative mobile communications device. I hear Fisher-Price are bringing out their new mobile soon. It’s idiot proof.
I partially agree with Daniel above but 1 thing I would point it.
These test pieces had no internals so was rigidity compromised?
A more rigid product would not have flexed as much to cause the screen the smash.
Also worth pointing out that this was the 3rd attempt at dropping the phone. If you drop your phone that many times you should go to the doctors to be checked for a motor neurone disease.
Thanks Daniel for such charming comment. I agree that harder does equate to brittle but my phone has just slipped off my lap onto a wooden floor and has shattered. This is a fall of a little over a foot onto a common houshold surface. When Fisher-Price bring out a phone with the same fetures then I will be sure to pick one up. However I can’t help but feel that this breakage was a lttle to easy to be acceptable. Besides what is 3 drops over the lifetime of a phone
In retrospect my remarks were unduly critical of the comments above. Thank you, James, for pointing that out. I appologise.
I agree that Apple have produced a phone that is incredibly fragile, and whilst their attempts at making their phones more durable will no doubt make them a little more scratch resistant, the addition of a breakable back surface is likely to increase the overall failure rate of their mobile devices.
I suppose these devices are, in a way, designed to be used with a case (as evidenced by Apple’s proprietery case, the “bumpers”). The name intimating that a ‘bump’ would be a very bad thing for this phone – as evidenced by your 1 foot drop on to a comparitively elastic surface (your wooden floor).
I imagine they can be used naked, with extreme care, but even the most careful individial is bound to drop it at some point. Why not by Apple Care, the company asks? Yours for only a yearly fee of 20% the cost of your new phone. A cheaper alternative might be to simply buy a new one if you break it.
Though there are many negative aspects to Apple products, I’m broadly in favour of them. Broadly. They provide a level of competition that keeps companies like Microsoft on it’s toes. Apple products have a style and (often annoying) fanbase that doesn’t appeal to a lot of people, but I find their mobile products both fast and functional which is why I buy into them. Over recent years I’ve noticed a marked improvement in the competition’s mobile devices in response to high sales of the Apple phone, waking them up from their daze of churning out fairly monotonous devices (I’m thinking of LG here) in comparison to their previous generation.
Sorry again for posting such a rude comment above.
