Last night Steve Jobs was interviewed at the D8 conference and spoke candidly about the original idea for the iPhone operating system, the Foxconn suicides, the missing iPhone, the elephant in room that is Flash Support and the platform war with Google Android.
iPhone OS origins
Steve Jobs firstly talked about how Apple had originally devised the iPhone OS for a tablet device and not the iPhone – but decided that they could make a great phone with the software and then the iPad later.
Foxconn
Jobs expressed his concern with the apparent suicides at their flagship production facility in China Foxconn – stating that the company has sent Apple representatives to factory at the moment and wanted to gauge what was going wrong and what they can do from their side of things.
Flash
Steve Jobs commented that he felted that Flash was a dead software and was on its way to technology graveyard and therefore wouldn’t be supported and stated HTML 5 was the future. He stated the market will decide and at the moment they are selling one iPad every 3 seconds – so the in his mind the market has spoken.
Missing iPhone 4G
He stated that the missing iPhone was being tested and felt that the phone may have been stolen and not lost – but wasn’t happy with the fact the they tried to sell the iPhone. And stated that they felt Apple were being he were being extorted and wouldn’t let it “slide”.
Google & Android
Jobs spoke about the supposed future platform war with Google Android – though he wouldn’t admit that their at war with anyone, he added that’s why they may have lost against Microsoft when they competed against Microsoft Windows several years ago. But stated that they were there first with regards to open source mobile operating software and Google has decided to compete with them. But concede Apple were more interested in what Nokia and RIM were doing rather than Google.
So what do think of what of Steve Jobs had to say – Arrogance or Genius? Have your say below.

He is both genius and arogant but he does it well. I cant help but like him even though he does not have any sort of fashion scence.
Steve Jobs is too Arrogant! He has to remember no one lasts forever and it wasn’t long ago that Mac was almost completely gone! but thanks to Microsoft’s investment it all got turned around with the invention of iPod!
Jobs is a genius and arrogant but with apples latest range of products (iPod, iPod touch, MacBooks,iPhone 1st gen,3g and soon the 4g)he has the right to be arrogant plus remember the golden rule in business,if you’re competitor is falling, kill him, don’t help him back to his feet which is what Microsoft done when it invested in apple, now apples market price is bigger than Microsoft and is the new number 1 tech company in the world, and this happened the day before the ipad came out in Britain, what about when the iphone4g comes out,if I was bill gates I would be kicking myself.
He is an interesting character – his comments on Flash are surprising – yes HTML 5 is going to be the future, but not for ages and no-one will be willing to make the move if they lose other users from older OS’s.
I think when a viable iPad competitor comes out with flash – they may well regret their position. I for one don’t relish the idea of re-designing the whole of my sight to get it working on a iPad or iPhone. I think that this is too much to ask for a small web publications and blogs.
